Neroli
Neroli oil is a plant oil produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium var. amara orBigaradia). Its scent is sweet, spicy and honeyed with flowery notes. The blossoms are gathered, usually by hand, in late April to early May. The oil is produced by water distillation, as the blossom is too fragile to endure steam distillation. More than 12% of all modern quality perfumes use neroli as their principal ingredient. Neroli is considered one of the most important aromatics for aromatherapy treatment for anxiety, and depression resulting from stress and anxiety, especially that of an emotional origin. It is both a sedative and a tonic. The oil has been said to treat heart palpitations, relieve insomnia and reduce nervousness. Neroli's calming effect can be tried by deeply inhaling the aroma, rubbing a few drops on the solar plexus, diluting in Jojoba oil and wearing as a natural perfume, or diffusing in small amounts. It is relaxing to the body and spirit, and may bring relief in seemingly hopeless situations. It is also a scent associated with romance.
The orange is the ‘golden apple’ spoken of in Greek mythology. The golden apple was the fruit that Juno gave to Jupiter on the day of their celestial wedding. According to folklore, the exchange of an orange between unmarried men and women is a simple charm to invite love to blossom between the two. Orange blossoms have been woven into a bride’s bouquet for 100’s of years to ensure good luck, happiness and fertility to the bridal couple. A bride who wore orange blossoms in her hair was proclaiming her virginity. Orange blossoms were also placed on the bridal bed to calm nervous apprehension before the bridal couple retired to the marriage bed.
It is said that neroli oil derived its name from a 16th century Italian princess, Anne-Marie of Nerola, who was the wife of Prince Flavio Orsini. Anne-Marie wore neroli as a perfume and even took aromatherapy baths with orange flower oil. Way ahead of her time, Italian society soon found itself in emulation of her, and her favorite neroli scented gloves became known as guanti di neroli and became socially de rigeur throughout French and Italian society, and probably beyond. Eventually the oil itself also acquired the name neroli. Inspired by the Princess of Nerola. The guild of glove and perfume -makers was soon stablished in 1656 and the court of Louis XV became known as "the perfumed court." Scents were applied daily not only to the skin but also to clothing, fans and furniture.
Neroli has been valued in many courts. The people of Venice particularly valued neroli and the therapeutic values of the flower, using it against the plague and other fevers, drinking it as a tisane, and rubbing it via distilled water into their bodies twice a day. Neroli was also renowned in the court of Queen Elizabeth 1 of England.
